The Many Faces of Steve Smith |
|
For most people, dealing with stereotypes holds a great deal of difficulty - not for Stephen Smith. You see, from birth Steve had to deal with the stereotype of being labeled "P.K", or "preacher's kid" as the members of his father's congregations used to dub him. And, If that weren't enough, Steve chose for himself one of the most stereotyped careers open to an entertainer today: clowning. Even there, Steve did not let the boundaries of definition hold him in. |
| Steve seemed destined for the stage at an early age. Some would credit his genetic pool, since his father is a minister and (as Steve puts it) his mother is one of the friendliest (and loudest) women in any town they lived in. Steve developed his love for the theatre in high school. It was only natural that he attend a college known for its Fine Arts Performance department. In 1973 he began his academic career at Oklahoma City University. There, in addition to earning a BS in Technical Theatre, Steve managed to squeeze in: the job of Director of OCU's Puppet People, development of ChristianSanity Theatre which toured local churches, performances or direction of over forty shows, and adding ventriloquism and close-up magic to his repertoire. In his spare time he worked as Supply Pastor or Youth Minister to several churches in the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church. |
